We noticed our 8 month old hen, Dixie Chic, was not acting right. She would hold her mouth open and make a lot of noises, so we took her to the vet. They did an xray, and discovered she is full of rocks and and appears to have eaten a dime. They recommended we isolate her and feed her mineral oil and Metamucil and hope she passes the problem. She seems to be eating and pooping, but no rocks and no dime. She hasn't laid an egg either. She seems to be loosing weight, as she is much thinner, but does seem to be in good spirits.

Any advice would be great...we will try anything and hope to save her....she is a sweetie!

When my 6 year old son swallowed a nickel the ER doc told us to give him Pepsi and mashed potatoes. I wouldn't give my chickens that though.

I'm going to say the rocks is probably grit and/or oyster shell if you have OS provided.
She likely has been eating the "grit" trying to process the coin.

I'm no expert and not very good at reading xrays, but I do wonder if the round looking orbs at the top (along the spine) are eggs. Not sure what those look like in an xray.
@Eggcessive @coach723 @staceyj @casportpony can you ladies take a look?

I would do as directed by the vet with the mineral oil and metamucil. She needs to stay hydrated. I would also add some poultry vitamins to the routine. Did they say she could eat too? Wet soupy feed made into a mash maybe. I would also gently massage the crop a couple of times a day. Hopefully she will pass all that and recover.

Keep us posted.
