Hello, So a roaming dog attacked my sweetest hen today. I brought her inside, she was in a state of shock, panting pretty bad. No obvious injuries at first, a lot of feathers gone and weak/scared. After checking she has an inch wide gash on her back near the left wing. I rinsed with saline and then generously sprayed vetiricyn antibacterial hydrogel on it. I covered with a non stick pad and vet wrap. Should I remove the bandage and just keep the wound clean and moist?

I gave her water with nutri drench and scrambled egg yolk for now. Keeping her in the bathroom for monitoring. She is pooping and walking around and has stopped panting. I don’t have a picture and don’t want to bother her too much. Any other advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd say take it off, wounds need to breathe. Twice a day rinse with saline and apply a thick layer neosporin. The last thing you want is the wound drying out.

Seperate her if you haven't already, make sure she is eating, if she isn't, mix her food with some scrambled egg.

Thanks! I wasn’t completely sure about the bandaging. I’ll take it off and provide the wound care. And thank you for the other advice too! She is separated from the others.

Air circulation through the wound is best. Otherwise you will have issues with nasty build up, like pus.

She will need antibiotics. Call your farm doc and start her on some.

Hello! You've done a great job! I recommend Penicillin G as an antibiotic. You can find it at tractor supply, or your local feed store.
I recommend the intro muscular injection. If you want to go that route, I can tell you about the appropriate dosage and needle gauge needed.

Hopefully helpfully,
Arwoon
