My hen was just attacked by a dog. She is, of course, a little shaken, but otherwise she seems fine. She has lost quite a few feathers, especially tail feathers. She is bleeding a bit at her tail, but there is also a scratch on her side just after her wing tip. She is eating and drinking. She is a 1 and a half year old New Hampshire Red, if that makes any difference. My other hens are treating her normally. The hen that was attacked is at the bottom of the pecking order, so I am worried that they'll pick on her.
Is there anything else I should be doing?

I have checked on her since then and she has started limping. I'm getting worried now. Nothing looks wrong with her leg.

I am not sure how bad the wounds are. I would be worried that the other hens might peck at the bleeding area(s), especially since she's at the bottom of the pecking order. If you could separate her, I would.

I would clean the wound(s). Mouths are dirty. For my hawk attack, I used an iodine solution. I also used Blu-Kote (germicide and fungicide) after I cleaned the wounds. In between the cleaning, I would put some Neosporin (WITHOUT pain relief - that's poisonous to chickens) between the cleaning. I also put antibiotics in Snow's water but her wounds were very bad and she did require surgery. It really depends on how bad the wounds are.

I am not sure about the leg. I'm sorry.

Now, I had one get attacked by a dog before, but I got the dog off quickly and there was no wounds at all. I didn't remove her from the flock because she was just shocked but had not bleeding wounds or other injuries. The bleeding worries me because the other chickens might be drawn to it and make it worse....

I don't know if this is the right thing to do. It's just my opinion so hopefully someone with more experience and knowledge will chime in!!!

Good Luck!

Thanks! The wounds aren't too bad. They're pretty big, but not deep. I have cleaned them a bit. I will be watching her closely for a while.

If they are pretty big, then my main concern would be the others picking at them or infection since well, they love those dirt baths!

Good luck with your girl!

I sadly had four of my chickens attacked by next doors dog.
The first 3..................well they didn´t make it, it was all too quick but as a dog grabbed at the 4th i managed to grab the dog. He let go leaving her with a load of missing feathers and a large area of split skin under her wing. My vet told us to treat it with watered down iodine and to keep an eye on her. She limped for around 5 days but still layed eggs. The skin kind of scabbed over on her back and then feathers finally started to grow back.
Not sure if that helps you much but its my story about a dog attack.
Hope yours gets better for for you. x
