Four days ago my 5 plus year old hen was attacked by a neighbor dog. She had tears all over her back and under one wing and all feathers on her back were gone. She bled where the skin was torn to the meat at her tail, but not so much on her back. I could see her back was open to the muscle, but the muscle did not seem to be ripped. She was breathing was normally. One wing drooped but did not seem broken. I couldn't get a vet to see her after calls were made to many in the area. I thought about putting her down, but wanted to let her have a chance to live if it was in her.
I put her in a warm bath with CleanLife No Rinse Shampoo and let her relax and soak for about 30 minutes and got the wounds cleaned. I then sprayed the tears and puntures with Vetericyn Plus (seemed to sting her). I put her in a deep tote with a blanket to rest and covered it. She was hot, panting at midnight, so I gave her a 5ml syringe of water with two pinches of 325mg aspirin then as much water as I could get in her. Next day a kind vet sewed her up (looks like Frankenchicken) and gave me antibiotics (SMZ TMP DS tablet 1/4 tablet every 12hrs for 10 days or more). I hid them in sardines first, then scrambled eggs, but now she is wise and refuses to eat anything with the crushed pills in them any more. Any advice on that? I use coconut oil with Frankensense on her back and wing skin to keep it moist (not covered). She has been improving daily. Much of her skin has a greenish tint, but I read that it is bruising. No drainage or bad smell. Today I gave her a sponge bath today with warm water and the No Rinse Shampoo and blow dried her. I made a box with hay for her under my kitchen table. She fell to sleep and loved it.
