Am so excited, ordering 4-6 baby hens Monday morning for delivery April 15! These will be the first chickens I've ever raised....although I have a Blue and Gold Macaw that thinks he owns the entire family!!
The biggest question I have is should I get pairs or can I choose all different hens. I have been reading about personalities and it seems that I could put Silver and Gold Laced Wyandottes together, Buff Orpington s, Black Australopes, Columbian Rocks, Production Reds, and maybe Aracauras together. I love color and variety, (am a gardener and make wearable art) maybe that's why I want all my chickens to be a mishmash of color!...but they have to get along. Should I stay with even numbers of hens? As with children if you have 3 or 5 at times there seems to be an odd man out...don't need that! Any and all answers would be greatly appreciated!!

All the breeds you mentioned should do fine together! If I were you I would also get some Leghorns as they lay a lot of eggs. All the chickens you mentioned will make a nice color arrangement. Four of the breeds you listed are more than one color so if you got California Grey Leghorns or White Leghorns they would be a nice, solid white (even though it is California Grey, they are still pretty much white). You can have even or odd numbers of hens, it really doesn't matter. I hope this helps!

Dear David,
I apologize for taking so long in replying. Thank you so much not only for qualifying my answer, but also for suggesting the California Leghorns, it's a great idea so I'm implementing one more chicken into the brood. My biggest fear is that they will not get along. I hate the idea of one of the chickens being picked on....I've seen it in a friends production chicken house and it was terrible. I could never do production "anything" love animals too much! I hope you have a wonderful upcoming weekend. Marla Sandridge

You're welcome! I have kept all these breeds together and there has never been any major problems with pecking. I hope you like your new flock!
