Hi everyone,
we have 3 warren red layers and one of them got caught by some animal that managed to get into the coop last night. She has an open wound about 1/2 inch in diameter under her wing. I isolated her in a separate box and tried to clean the wound with some water. She hardly drinks or eat, even though we offered her treats and there is water close to her, and she just lays there and closes her eyes slowly... She doesn't look to be loosing blood but the wound is pretty bad. She can hardly stand, and only on one leg. What else can I do?

And since this is my first post, here's a little introduction, I'm Martin, 29, from Quebec, and my girlfriend and I had our hens for about a year now.
Thanks for any help

I'm sorry I have no answers for you. I hope she gets better.

Don't know enough to help you but wanted to bump. Maybe put neosporin on the wound to help prevent infection if you can. You may have to have it sewn up or do it youself. There are some people here that can give recommendatations if they see the thread. Do a search under emergencies and see if there is something similar.

Hope she does okay.

She's probably in shock. I would put neomycin on wound also (make sure there's no lidocaine or benzocaine in it). Keep her warm and quiet, try to feed her some yogurt, maybe with a bit of warm oatmeal in it. Also, a drop of Poly-vi-sol (no iron) baby vitamins either on her beak or in yogurt is a good idea.
Give her a stuffed toy or fluffed up towel scrap for company; hope she'll be better in the morning and you can clean her up better.

Depending on what animal got her there could be internal injuries from the crush of the jaws, if there is she may not pull through and you should be prepared for that. wash the wound very good with some saline or sterile water and if it is not bleeding just leave it open. It will scab over and look very nasty while it heals. Be sure to watch for infection and since spring is here be sure to watch for maggots in the wound or fly eggs around the wound.

Since there may be a possibility of internal bleeding give no asprin for pain as it could make the bleeding worse.

Electrolytes in the water will help her get through this and if you can't find any at the feed store you can use pedialyte cut 50/50 with water or do the same with Gatorade.
