Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice about my Gold Wyandotte hen, Penny. She’s missing feathers on her back and definitely needs a saddle. Yesterday I noticed she was bleeding, so I separated her right away.

My plan was to put her back with the flock once her saddle arrives, but I’m wondering: should I wait until her wound heals first, or is it safe to put her back right away with the saddle on?

Right now she’s separated, but I want to make sure I’m doing everything I can for her care. Should I be treating the wound with something specific? And when it comes time to reintroduce her, what’s the best way to do that?

Any tips or experiences would be really appreciated — I just want Penny to heal up and stay safe with the rest of the flock.

Thank you!

I would put triple antibiotic on that to help it heal. I think once you put a saddle on her it should be okay to put her back with the flock. If they can't see it they shouldn't peck at it, but keep an eye on them. If they do peck, can you put her in a dog crate so she's still with the flock but safe from harm?

i noticed i had blood on my hand a short while after i was done holding her and was panicing bc i knew it had to come from her so i found the spot that was bleeding

that i found i stopped looking after i saw the first spot there may be more bloody spots i didnt see.

Look on her sides under her wings. Sometimes a rooster's spurs can cause cuts under there.

Sorry, fixed typos
our rooster is 6 months old and doesnt have much for spurs yet

Hmm. Then it's hard to see how he could have injured her on her back. 🤔 It almost looks more like her feathers have been plucked but I'm not sure. Let me ask an Educator.

@Eggcessive, what do you make of this?
