Hen boxes

Here are my nesting boxes. They haven't been used for laying eggs yet (I can't wait)

the last one is a picture of the inside. I don't have vinyl on the floor of the boxes but that sounds like a very good idea. My chickens are only 12 weeks old so I think I have some time to do that.

my boxes are 10x11 and are built into the wall between the coop side and the feed room as is the feeder which hold 40lb of feed.
this set up is easy to maintain, dry when its raining, warm in winter, works for my birds of all sizes I could not be happier with this set up.
oh and I built it myself no help and no experience in building all I had going for me was a good imagination and some good building and chicken books.

you are supposed to build and paint the nesting boxes before the roof goes on right?

I also went 14x14x 14 with the 1x4 across to keep nesting material in. For barred and Buff Rocks, I know it works because it worked 30 yrs ago for RIRs. You know; "If it works don't fix it". As for cleaning I change the nesting and floor material as needed.

I use horse feed (flat back) buckets by cutting holes in the side of the coop smaller than the rim and a hinged and hooked board holds them in. they have a flat "bottom" when in position. so easy to clean.

I use 5 gallon Buckets......Open end faces hatch for egg collecting and bottoms are cut out with a small lip on the bottom that faces the inside of the coop for chicken access.
