Thank you for the update rabitrun - it is often frustrating to find a thread describing symptoms that you are looking for, only to never know what the outcome was.
I am sorry for your loss, but you definitely did the right thing for your girl. Unfortunately production chickens have a tendency to start laying internally from around the age of two and a half or three years. I have lost two girls this way, and it is horrible. I am definitely not going to buy production varieties in the future - I will go for more all-purpose breeds, who may lay less regularly but who will hopefully have a longer, happier life.
