My cuckoo marans, Bernice, was doing well when, suddenly, I noticed that she laid an egg on the hen house floor beneath the nest box, something she never does. Then, I found her lying down, unable to walk. I've put her in a box in the garage with food and water. At first I thought she might be sick, so started giving her Corid. But, soon I saw that she's perfectly healthy and it seems that she can't stand on her left leg. I also noticed that several of her claws had big glops of poo on them, so I cleaned them off with warm soapy water. She seemed to enjoy it, but her condition didn't change.

It's been about 5 days, now, and she lying in the box with both legs to the side. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong, and what I can do? Other than not walking, she seems fine.

Thanks from a worried, 7

How old is she? Can she stand on the one leg still, or not at all now? Do you think she may have fallen or flew into something and injured or broke her leg? I would put her on vitamins right away, especially B-1 and vitamin E. If you have any people vitamin B, you can dissolve some in her water today, but PolyVisol baby vitamins work well, and you just give 2 drops by mouth daily. Take her out of her box every couple of days and check her ability to walk. Have you had any respiratory diseases in the flock in the past?

No history of respiratory diseases. This chicken is about 18 months old, but I bought her last spring and added her to my existing flock. One chicken recently died of coccidiosis, so I treated the whole flock.

Currently, she can't stand at all, even though I suspect it's the left leg. She was in the run with 7 others when this happened, so I have no clue what went wrong. I'll get some Polyvisol today, and try her on her feet again this afternoon.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks, 7

Then, again, maybe it's not her leg. I tried standing her up yesterday afternoon, but no dice. She can move her legs, but can't stand. She also has watery poop. She's drinking water, but only eats a little.

Any ideas?

My hen is the same but she eats and drinks fine, she has also found away of shuffling round on her wings instead of walking properly.
She sits fine except her wings sag a little to one side. Several people have suggested Marek's disease but I don't think she is paralised.
