She is a Golden Comet about 1.5 yrs old. Had her and 4 others since they were 2 months old. Has been laying everyday until a few weeks ago when she started crowing. She was the friendliest one, not anymore. She does not mount any of the other hens or act aggressive, just crows first thing in the morning. Any ideas why, what happened to her?

Has she been separated from her flock? Has she gotten any recent injuries? Has she talked broody at all? Being what she is, she might have a hormone imbalance. Watch for rooster behavior.

Some hens crow for no obvious reason. I have seen it common in bantam hens to crow though. Here's a bantam hen that I had who'd crow when separated from her flock:

I'm thinking she's got a hormone imbalance. Unfortunately, I don't know how to fix that.

Does she appear to be losing any feathers at all? A molt can cause the lack of laying. (Some molts are light enough that it's just a feather here and there, and unnoticeable.) Also, has the temps been dropping in your area?

They all went through their first molt a couple months ago. I am in Florida and yes the temps are changing. She went through winter last year just fine.

Ok. This is her second winter. Hens usually do great in their first winter, but oftentimes slow down or stop during their second winter. Because you're in Florida, I wouldn't expect the temps to drop as much as they do here though. I'm thinking a possible hormone imbalance.

Thank you for your response. Off to look up hormone imbalance.
