hen dead, extrememly bloated

Not that I have anything valuable to offer, but we found one the same way during the extreme heat we had a few weeks ago. I went to open the coop in the morning and she was in the nest box with a bluish comb and very bloated and heavy. She had laid an egg the day before she died and seemed very healthy when I locked the girls up for the night. It was totally weird but all the other chickens have been fine. Sorry for your loss.

I have a hen with ascites that I've been treating for the past year and a half. The vet drains her abdomen about every six months and I give her a daily dose of milk thistle extract for her liver. In her case, the cause is fatty liver disease but ascites can also be caused by congestive heart failure. I sounds like it may be ascites that did her in. The good news is its not contagious. I'm sorry about your loss.
