Hi, new to chickens, about 8 months into it now. Had a hen die the other night and don't know why. Found what looked like an underdeveloped egg (or one that did not develop correctly) beside her on the ground. Have pics of it. Can anybody tell me if that is what it is and if that is what killed her?

Thanks!

Here are the links to the 3 pics I have of it:

WOW!!!! I dunno but that would kill me. Sorry I wish I knew but I'm still new here myself. some one will be able to tell you. atleast heres a bump.

Good luck and God Bless!

To add to the description of what I think was an egg, it was "meaty", not fluidy at all, completely solid but not rock hard, could cut it easily with a knife.

I've seen other people post pictures of similar things their hens have laid. You might want to do a search under "internal layer". Sounds like that may have been her problem. Sorry about your girl

whew! It looks to me like she was laying eggs over eggs inside. You can see the different colors almost like a tree. Poor birdie. I'm so sorry for your loss!

Looks like she was laying internally and even though she passed that thing, may have had a bad infection in the uterus. My guess is she died of infection. Your weird egg like thing is indeed weirder than most since it has not one but two centers. Makes me wonder if there weren't more? If you were the curious hard stomached type, you could do an autopsy to try and determine if that was so.

Probably there was nothing you could have done for her even had you known sooner. Sorry for your loss.
