There will be an update on Post #3. I just re-worded the title here...

We have 2 lavender guinea hens, Blanche & Savanna, both 3 years old. They usually roost on a rafter in the pole barn next to a pen of half-grown chicks. In the morning they hop down into the pen, have a light breakfast of the chicks' feed (the chicks spend the night in an enclosed coop in that pen), and wait for us to open the gate for them to spend the rest of their day roaming around the yard.

As of last night they both seemed perfectly well & roosted on their rafter. But this morning we found them both by the gate, Blanche pacing back & forth as usual, but Savanna just standing still. My son picked her up & set her down in another place and again she just stood there. Then when she started to pant so he thought she was thirsty, and took her to a water fount. I found her there laying sort-of sideways. Not on her keel but not on her side.

Her color looks good, vent clean, eyes bright, breathing well, no congestion or wheezing. She doesn't seem lightweight. Since they freerange all day I have no idea how she's been eating or pooping. I think she's been laying up until recently, the kids haven't been diligent to collect the eggs from the guinea nest every night, so I can't tell if both hens have been laying or just one. No bones feel broken, she doesn't seem to be in pain.

I have her in the hospital pen now. She just lays on her keel, panting. When you stand her up she just goes back down. I have food & water nearby, but she hasn't yet touched them.

Please tell me what you think it might be and what I should do for/to her! I'm afraid it's that Marek's disease, do guineas get that? And if so, what then? These birds have been on every inch of the yard. Please advise, I appreciate your imput on this. Thank you.

I checked on her about 20 minutes ago & she was just standing up in the pen. Checked again 2 minutes ago & now she's laying on her keel again, head up, fairly alert, not panting. I don't think she's eaten or drunk anything. No poop that I can see. Please help me diagnose & decide what to do.

When we went to check on her again Savanna had died. Until then, when I'd look at her in the pen through the window, she was just sitting on her keel, still, head up. But this time we went out it seemed she had been thrashing around right before the end. There were loose feathers around the pen and she was wedged in the opposite corner. This is a wire cage about 2' X 4' up on high legs, I don't think a critter was bothering her. Though she had a bit of blood on her face & back, I think it was from cutting her poor face on a loose wire while she was moving around. It was a very shallow cut, it wasn't what killed her.

Fearing she died of a disease, I took plastic gloves to pick her up and put her in a plastic bag to place in the trash can. I checked her vent & it had a little goo around it, I thought it was her body expelling its last waste before/as she died.

But as I was clearing out the cage, I lifted the overturned food bowl and found... an egg! A perfect clean final egg. Thank you, Savanna.

All right, NOW what do I do? What do you think she died of? Marek's? What else would have these symptoms?
Sudden weakness
Quick death
Thrashing around right before dying

And what can I do to protect the rest of the flock? I'd think that if she had something communicable then everybird has already been exposed. Please advise, thank you!

I'm so sorry about Savannah

I really don't have any idea about what could have been wrong with her, but I did want to tell you that I've had two hens die while in an infirmary (dog cage) in my living room, and both thrashed around crazily the moment before they died. It was extremely disturbing. They didn't have the same symptoms as yours, but they both died that way. I'm limited in experience with chickens dieing, but maybe the thrashing is not unusual?
