My hen Fluffy is 6 months old. She is one of 4 I hatched myself. I had to give my 2 roosters away because we aren't allowed to have them in the city. So I had Fluffy and Nell as of late March. I just went and got 4 more hens. I asked the lady who sold them to me about disease and she said her flock was healthy. I looked at them all as closely as I could and saw no signs of disease. I bought 2 blue orpington/cochin mixes and a cochin and a barred rock on Sunday June 8th. Today (Thursday June 12th) I noticed that Fluffy had a feather stuck to her beak. On closer inspection I noticed that it was stuck in dried pus. Her eyes are not fully opened, they seem foamy and there was dried pus all over her beak. I checked her behind and there was lots of poo dried under her rectum. I have cleaned up her beak and did my best with the poo. She drank a little bit in front of me but I haven't seen her eat since I put her back in the coop. She went to rest in the corner. She doesn't love being picked up so she could have just been recuperating after that...

None of the other chickens are exhibiting symptoms.

I loaned my Storey's Guide to Chickens to my friends so I can't look it up easily in there and I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction?

thank you so much

OK SO I SETTLED ON MG OR MS (SOME SORT OF CRD) AS ALL THE SYMPTOMS FIT, BUT NOW FLUFFY IS PRETTY MUCH ENTIRELY RECOVERED WITH NO MEDICATION AND A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CHICKEN (FROM NEW BATCH) HAS DIED AFTER LESS THAN 24 HOURS OF SHOWING DIFFERENT SYMPTOMS. SHE HAD NO EYE FOAMING OR DISCHARGE ON THE BEAK, GOT LETHARGIC LAST NIGHT, DIDN'T WANT TO MOVE AROUND THIS MORNING AND WAS DEAD BY 3PM TODAY.

I didn't see any weird stuff with her legs forwards, is there any reason to be concerned this is Marek's? Could it still be CRD? Somethign totally different? I'm stumped and don't want to cull the other 5 if it's unnecessary...

CRD eye bubbles are common. sorry
Thank you Granny Hatchet

She seems to be getting rapidly worse, her tail feathers are drooping and she's not holding her head all the way up.

She has been in the coop with the other 5 hens since the 4 arrived on Sunday. Is there any hope the others won't get it?

I see there is no treatment that I can find, am I mistaken?

Do I need to cull her?

there is treatment, there is no cure. they remain carriers passing it to any other chicken you bring in. tylan will make her better but under stress it can come back. the one hen does sound like it may be too late unless you have the med. already? they probably all will get it but not for sure. isolate to be on the safe side.

THank you so much.

I live in the city and am having trouble finding somewhere to buy Tylan 50, I read your other thread on CRD. I'm trying as fast as I can.

I dont' sell or trade chickens but we do eat the eggs. Once we have finished the dose will the eggs be edible again?

thank yo so much for your help. I'm so sad over here :(

one of my other chickens is now coughing. One that I just brought in. ALso possibly my other original.

Is there any way this ISN'T CRD? I don't want to cull them unecessarily. I also don't have ready access to Tylan 50 , but I'm trying to get it.

I found a store 1.5 hours away that carries Tetracycline 250. Sounds like it's the same active ingredient as Duramycin. Do you think I could use that to treat them? Or is it only for prevention?

I found another one about the same distance that carries oxytricycline. I know I can't save Fluffy, she's deteriorating fast. I had to help her a lot as a chick and she probably just needs to be culled. The others though, might be saved? I thought I could at least give them the tetracylcine for a bit to see if they stop coughing? They don't have any other symptoms.

I guess I just am looking for advice about whether it's worth saving them if I have to medicate them, since I can't then eat the eggs.

What a horrible day :(

i am sorry , i fell asleep. i cant tell you to treat or cull. a lot of people disagreed with my choice to treat im sure but they wouldnt say it. i have so much money tied up in these chickens i didnt see how i couldnt try. they are just finishing up antibiotics again now because it came back and i lost about 25 of them this go around. you can use the oxitet. , you can eat the eggs after a withdrawal time. i am not sure how long , i have forgotten. it is my understanding you can use the deneguard for treatment and preventative with no worries of eating the eggs. dont do this without double checking please.
