I have an almost one year old hen who has been laying for a while, and today I noticed her acting slightly lethargic with her abdomen facing downward as if she was pushing. Upon further inspection, I saw that her feathers were covered in a mix of poop and what looked slightly like blood, and a bit of yellow. I saw that she had a softshell egg covering sticking out of her bottom, and I put her in an epsom salt bath, where each time she pushed, I gently helped thread it out until it was all out. A pic of what came out is attached.
I washed off what was on her feathers and she is isolated and drying off. Her cloaca closes up to normal, and then sometimes
appears that she’s still pushing. I’ve attached a photo of what it looks like now.
I don’t know if she still has the egg contents inside of her, or if it came out a while ago and all that was left was the covering. Is there a way I could know, and was what I did the right thing to do in this situation? It all smelled like infection, so I don’t know what that means, if it’s inside her or if it was caused by the shell covering. Is there anything else I can do for her?
