Hen found dead WHY please???

My friends son found one of their hens dead in the nest area with a bloody egg and a hole in her back end. What could this have been please? thanks

What do you mean by "hole"? Like, something-took-a-bite-out-of-her hole?

Without anything else to go on, I'd say that she was killed by a possum.

Yeah, I'd have to agree... if the hole was a chomp. Possums chomp from the bottom up.

not sure if they meant something bit her. she said her son said the hole was the size of the egg. thats all the description. i didnt know if it had something to do with her laying the egg and maybe she couldnt. i was confused on why there was a hole and the egg was out and she was dead.

she said there was no sign of anything getting into the pen. i will ask about the vent or if it was another spot.
