Hello,
Wondering if anyone has any guesses for the following situation:
The Chicken: MABEL
-2.5-3.5 years old
-blue red laced Wyandotte
-laying
-bright red face and comb - not dry - she LOOKS like a perfect bird
-7lbs - one of our biggest girls
-member of a flock of 11, then are in a DELUXE winterized coop, sand litter on the inside. Fenced in (and tarped) run, lots of ventilation inside and outside.
-eats like a champ
-seems to be fine with the cold
I have noticed for a while, that when I go to throw food in their yard every morning, she is VERY vocal while she eats. It has a "nom nom nom" kind of vibe. But in the past couple of weeks, I have noticed that when she pauses eating, she raises her head up, and is kind of short of breath. I have researched online, and she has no discharge in her nostrils or eyes. She LOOKS like a perfectly healthy bird. My online research has pointed to gapeworm, or built up calcium??
I suspect I will be advised to isolate her, but she has been around the flock already for such a long time, that I doubt whatever it is is contagious, as they would all be behaving the same way.
We need to do the second round of worming this Monday, and I am hoping she will let us look down her throat to see if there is anything to see, I was planning on putting a bit of Vet RX on her beak when we administer the worm meds to see if that helps clear her up?
Anyway, I'm not panicking, since she is fine otherwise, and hasn't had a decrease of energy, appetite, anything. In fact, she just started laying again (we supplement light), so I don't think she's on death's door.... but curious if anyone has any suggestions?
Thank you for your time!
See video below, if you turn up your volume, you can hear how she sounds when she's eating.
