I have a newbie question.
I have a group of hens and two rescue roo's that have already been laying. One of the hens is a silkie, and the rest are standard. The silkie is the one that sits on the eggs, I have yet to see one of the standards sit for any length of time. But the silkie sits inside on the eggs, perfectly content. There is always a hen, I think it is the same one, I haven't been able to make sure since I just noticed this a couple of days ago, but a hen is always standing outside of the silkie's box. She seems like she is standing guard. She won't let anyone or thing near the box without putting up a giant fuss. Is this normal behavior?
Thanks
Rachel

She said she's next to use that box and she wants to make sure everyone knows it!!

That is sweet though...

Awww, reminds me of my old Barred Rock Matilda. She would always stand guard for the hens in the nest and chase off anyone who tried to get near.

It was so sweet to see her standing under the nest and cocking her head to look up at the hen who was laying.

I sure miss her. Anyhoo, yeah it's normal.
