This morning we found Penny under the coop ramp gulping for air with zero interest in breakfast. She is 9 months old and normally eats water spiked with kombucha, fermented whole grains, and has been pastured grazing. She did lay an egg yesterday.
I isolated her. Her crop wasn’t completely empty from last night, I can feel about 10 seeds in there but doesn’t feel full or squishy. Every breath she stretches her neck out like something is stuck in her airway. I tried crop massage, trying to get her to vomit (she didn’t), and I’ve been feeding her with a squirt bottle: electrolyte water with a little sunflower oil and ACV. I also added some garlic & rosemary tea with honey.
Her breath smells foul and she isn’t moving around. No other symptoms. Her eyes are clear, no leaking fluids.
Checked the cameras, this has been happening since at least 6pm yesterday. It’s 3pm now.
I just don’t know if it’s sour crop (yeast infection), respiratory issue, mold, parasite, or bacteria so I’m not sure how to treat it. Other than gapeworm (which seems rare in the US), I haven’t read much on this gulping for air symptom. I am in NH.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
This is a video, not sure if it’ll work to upload it
