I treated the 12 birds i inherited with Terra Vet 10 in hopes that my 2 hens that are gurgling when they breathe would clear up. No luck. I have looked in there throats and I see nothing out of the ordinary and no bad smell.

The rooster I have however smells awful around the beak area but he is not gurgling or raspy.

None of my birds seem sick, running around, eating and drinking lots.

Anyone have any pointers? And can I eat the eggs of a hen that sounds like this? Thanks.

Terra-Vet 10 is tetracycline hydrochloride soluable powder if I'm not mistaken. Seminolewind is correct; tylan 50 injectable would be better. Dosage is 1/2cc for standard size birds once a day for 3 days, injected into the breast muscle just under the skin. Alternate breasts and dont inject into the same spot. Dosage for smaller birds is 1/4cc.
You can give it to them orally if you wish. Dosage is 1/2cc orally once a day for 5-7 days, no more than 7 days....1/4cc for smaller birds.
Your birds were probably not drinking enough of the soluable powder mixture to be effective.

x2. If the bird is over 5 lbs, it wouldn't hurt to inject another .5 cc under the skin on the back of the neck in addition to the breast muscle. Also check the crop to see if it is full. Sometimes holding a bird with a full crop can make them gurgle when they breathe.

I have 2 jeans that are doing the same thing. One of my RiR is was bad. I went three nights ago to close their coop door and could hear her gurgling as I walked up to the coop. We want to keep our flock as natural as possible, but I will dose them with antibiotics if I need to.

My wife has recently obtained a book for home remedies for people and the farm. We've also looked at an tale ticks about oregano oil for maintaining your flock.

We started our chickens on eating minced garlic (8 oz) twice a day. We also made them some collards, onions, and oregano salads twice a day. The RIR that was awful two days ago is not weeping and gurgling anymore also the nasal discharge has stopped.

Too much of a good thing; collards for example...can be just as bad.

So do you think it would be safe to eat her eggs? The gurgler? I call her Wheezy...
