Hen Gurgling... need help planning a treatment...precautions

My fear treating if not sick then you build an immunity it won't help when needed
what is the real question the gurgle or the death of one ? @Wyorp Rock

Yeah, I understand this. I’ll typically wait and see if it’s just one bird with symptoms. I wasn’t planning on treating the flock when the first bird got sick. I just individually focused on her. I’m panicked because this gifted hen seemed to catch the same thing so quickly...and without being in close vicinity to the sick one, plus with me disinfecting things. I think I’m just going cuckoo because it seems highly contagious.

How to treat the gurgle... that would be my main concern.
Second concern is how to I help my flock from possible outbreak. (I;be got tons of meds on hand, but uncertain what to use and how)

Third question could be.., if this new gifted hen recovers... will she be safe to incorporate into my flock! She is a bantam- my guess she’s an Olandsk dwarf hen. I have a large flock of Seramas that are very healthy (separate from my standard sized chicken flock) ..I was going to put her with the Seramas, but now I’m too nervous, even if she recovers, I’d nervous. Need some advice on that I suppose.

If you treat cannot eat the eggs okay
You mean, for a time, right? Not forever, right? Just checking. I do know there is a time frame not to eat the eggs.. 1 week to 30 days...I can’t remener. Most of my flock is now molting, eggs have been scarce anyway. In fact I planned on de-worming soon. There were a couple of hens that looked on the thin side.

most if i remember right at 2 week withdrawl, some of the stronger ones might be longer.

One off the eggsperts like Eggcessive or wyorprock would know

Oxytetracyline has a zero day withdrawal in Canada. Here I think people recommend 2 weeks.

Okay, that's one I weighed and did the math on. :D if you want to use 800 mg per gallon, use 5 teaspoons.

Okay, thank you Kathy. So I am using the right stuff? I had an outbreak years ago where the chickens were making awful noises... tetracycline didn’t touch it, then I de-wormed for possible gapeworm...no better. Even gave chicken sauna treatments with something ..I forget what exactly..it didn’t help. I had a few die gasping for air, gurgling. Those were the ones that had the symptoms the longest. It seems as though those were at that point, untreatable while the rest were. My guess is that it was MG because The denagaurd 12.5% was the only thing that cured the rest. (I want to say that is a closed flock separated from my others). So I’m fearful this is that again... but this new gifted hen wasn’t even ever near any of my flocks, so my guess is it’s just basic respiratory. ....or so I’m hoping as those seem easy to treat.

So far the leghorn I brought in last night, after treatment with antibiotic, right now she;s seemingly doing better...up scratching a bit and eating. Forgot to say last night her comb and head were hot to the touch. She looks better now.

The Olandsk dwarf (gifted hen) ..I don’t hear gurgling right now, so.. seems maybe the tetracycline has started to work.

Hey, I just want to apologize too... I get SO freaked out when I have ailments in my flock. You’d think after 9 years of chicken keeping you’d relax a bit more, but I tend to get more nervous after seeing how horrendous some of these chicken diseases can be.

So thank you....much appreciation to all of you responding... I can’t seem to think straight when it’s one of my own birds! ...and that’s why I’m asking for advice. Kinda need other’s opinions to make sure I’m not making a mistake.

:hugs I know how you feel all too well.

It's the right stuff if what she has is sensitive to oxytetracycline, so If that's all you have, try it. How much does she weigh? Let me know and I will figure out an oral drench for you too.

She’s actually perking up as I type! So I think it’s working. I can hear her munching away at the food... talking about the leghorn here. With the gifted Olandsk dwarf hen.. she is not gurgling...so I think it’s working. I might call on you later if things shift for the worse. But so far so good.

Thank you, as always! I will always remember how you helped me with my Plymouth Rock hen, Maple. She recovered fully lived a good two years after that. I’ll be sure to use the dosage you figured out for me tomorrow when I have to mix up a new batch.
