I got three hens three weeks ago. The Buff had a spot on her back that had few feathers, almost bald. The farmer said this was from the rooster, so I thought this would heal. However, she is at the bottom of the pecking order and the boss hen is pecking on that spot. I have read posts here and people keep mentioning protein. My hens are spoiled. Good mash, scratch, mixed treat with mealworms and grain, ground up egg shells. Should I buy worms? The hens have a nice coop and a 4x8 pen, not free range. I feel I want to cover that area on her back. Otherwise, I love my chickens, and love this site!!

Chickens are attracted to feather picked/red areas. If you dye the skin a dark color, it will have better changes of being ignored. Take some Blu Kote or food coloring and dab the raw skin. The hens were stressed from the move and sometimes develop behavioral issues so give it a week or so to see if you have a real problem on your hands.
