Yeah, the hormones change close to POL, making them a little nutty, lol. They usually settle once they're laying regularly, though.

I'm very new to chickens as well. I've got 9 week olds, but I've only had them for just over a week. The chicks I raised are between 4 and 8 weeks old. And they're all my first flock. Some lessons have been learned the hard way. Like that small mole on my back that's been undisturbed since it showed up when I was 15? When wearing a tank top, they'll jump on my shoulder and think that it is treat. Ouch... The dermatologist says it's fine, no need to remove. Then I got chickens.

The best early chicken tip I read was spend lots of time in the pen quietly observing and listening to them. I'm so glad you're alright! I do spend a lot of time in my run. I don't pick them up, rather I let them jump on me or walk over my legs. I'll sit right on the ground with them. They wouldn't want me to sing to them.
