That's because chickens can't digest whole corn kernels entirely. The seed coat is too strong and the gizzard and the cecal can't digest it. That's why cracked corn is better for animals that don't have teeth to chew.

She was digesting whole corn just fine until she got sick with crop bound. I got her food to go down but now the corn she's eating is not being digested like normal. I been giving her grits for acouple days now so hope that wil help.

Hi and welcome to BYC- glad that you have joined us. Proprietary chicken feed is probably the best thing to give you flock I'd suggest.

Whole kernel corn can have the same effect on humans. The corn she ate before may have caused crop issues. Corn fattens poultry but is not nutritional - just cheap which is why so many people use it.

If you haven't already, I'd stop giving whole corn to her. Stick with a nutritionally balanced feed and no treats, at least until her poop returns to normal.
