Frankie, Turken/bantam Cochin hen hatched 7/11/23 has suddenly become lethargic and was disinterested in food but still eating a little, now has completely stopped eating. She’s still drinking but has lost a good amount of weight, doing the whole standing poofed up sick bird thing, but still energetic enough to run from me. Breathing normal, no nasal discharge, eyes clear, no visible parasites, no muscle weakness, vent looks normal and clean, comb and wattles are nice and red, no injuries or broken bones and there’s no egg that I can feel in her abdomen. The only thing I can see or feel that’s off are her wing feathers. They almost look like they’ve been chewed on? They roost 4-5 feet off the ground depending on what perch they’re on, so I don’t know what could’ve chewed on her, if anything. It’s only her wings. Her sister is going through a hard molt right now, but this is different. They were all wormed in September. They eat a locally milled 20% protein feed with free-choice oyster shell. Nobody else is showing any symptoms. Any ideas? I’ve started her on vitamin B and oxytetracyline.

It may just be the start of her moult. As long as she is drinking clean fresh water and is otherwise as you describe, I wouldn't worry and just give her plenty of space. Those feathers need replacing badly; they are very worn. So her body will be gearing up to drop them and grow thousands of new ones. My birds often go off their food at the start of this transition. And want to be left alone, and especially not touched by person or other bird. Their skin gets very sensitive. The internal organs undergo changes as part of the moult too - the reproductive system shrinks and the immune system ramps up, for example - and the digestive system is impacted as well. So if you just make sure there is food for her as and when she wants it - and a variety of foods, because the body refurbishment going on needs micronutrients that are not often required - and don't start hitting her system with random meds, she should come through this fine, like almost every other bird in the world every year.

This definitely isn’t just a molt. As far as I can tell her crop is emptying overnight. She’s drinking more water than normal. Seems a little more like herself today but still not 100%. Her mom had liver issues, but I’m not seeing any of the signs of liver disease in her.

Roosting 4 to 5' above the ground seems awfully high to me, any way you can lower that to about 3' and still have it be higher than the nest boxes? Could she be tearing up her wings during landing? Feel her frop first thing in the morning before she eats or drinks to be sure it is emptying. If you need to doctor her, take her off the roost at night, they don't see well in the dark and you won't have to chase her. Then you can easily check her for mites.

Re-check that crop to make sure it's emptying. If it's not emptying, address that symptom.

Often there is an underlying condition that cause the crop to slow.
Reproductive disorders, worms, coccidiosis and infection are a few.

Hard to know what direction to go, getting a fecal float to rule out worms is best, but so often vet care is not available. So consider deworming. If she's molting, then use Valbazen to deworm. Dose is 0.08ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10days.

Did the Oxytetracycline make any difference?

Re-check for lice/mites, I'd think about giving her a good dusting with Permethrin poultry dust.

Any mice in the coop?
