Howdy so one of my young hens has swollen feet I noticed. I checked both feet very well for bumble foot or any wounds and nothing. I know in the pictures there’s a dark spot on her toe but it’s just dirt. I’m stumped at what’s causing this. She does seem to be lifting the right foot up more when she’s standing but they are both swollen but the right definitely more. By the way sorry about the photos I had to take them tonight with a headlamp when she was sleeping because she wouldn’t let me catch her today! Sprain maybe? But wouldn’t she be limping? Heeeeelp

What do you feed, including treats?

They both look puffy, can you get a photo of the front of the legs/feet with her standing?

A couple of things come to mind. Gout or Mycoplasma Synoviae.

If it's Gout, then you can give Tart Cherry to see if that helps. If it's MS, then there's really no treatment. An antibiotic may help with inflammation, but the condition can be chronic.

Hopefully others like @Eggcessive @coach723 or @MysteryChicken will chime in.

Looks like gout to me.

I’m starting to think so too! Wonder is the feed was too much for her because she’s not laying yet so the protien isn’t good for her yet.

Starting to think it’s gout too! Makes sense I don’t think she laying yet so she’s been eating the high protein chicken food this is totally on me! I’ll isolate her and switch her to a different feed and try the tart cherry thank you:)

Look at her ankles and hock joints for swelling. That is a symptom of mycoplasma synoviae or MS. Usually the toes appear normal. If just the feet are swollen and toes have a lumpy appearance, that is a symptom of articular gout. Neither condition is easily treated. The tart cherry extract is a common treatment of human gout, but may or may not help. Here are some common causes of gout:

What's the protien level? Also it's not the protien that's an issue it's excess calcium.

Tart cherry has helped my older birds with gout, or arthritis. It just needs to be given regularly 1-2 times a day.

Gout can have many possible causes. Chickens can tolerate 16-20% protein, but if they are fed 30%, that can be harmful. Salt or sodium bicarb, or salty table scraps, and excess calcium in the diet can be possible causes. Exposure to molds or aflatoxins is another cause. The link posted above lists causes.
