I recently picked up 2 silver laced wyandotte hens and when I got them home, I noticed one of them had a tail pointing down. She seems to eat and walk around fine, runs out when the door is open, etc. Acts like a chicken should, just has a droopy tail. She is 7 months old, and we have only had her a few days, so I haven't had a chance to see her laying habits yet, but is there ever a time when a hens tail points down and they are not diseased? I have seen hens with crooked tails, is this the same thing? Thanks.

My neighbor has one hen like this he calls Down Butt. He thinks it was an injury, but she also is fine laying eggs, eating and moving around. I wish I had more info for you, all I know is that his hen has been this way for several years. She lives a happy life. :)

Hope that helped a little?

If her tail previously was not droopy,i would keep an eye on her. In my girls a droopy tail always indicates that she/he is not feeling well, then i start checking them over immediately. Never had anything serious with them, just the occasional bully picking on one,or the heat was bothering someone, once i address the problem tails would be up and she/he would go on their happy way.
