One of my older hens who has never hatched a chick in her life, decided to brood a small nest of abandoned duck eggs. She hatched one egg successfully. I think the others were stolen by a snake or crows. At first she ignored the wet, newborn chick, and even attcked it. I found it wet and weak on the grass a few mornings ago, brought it in, placed it under a warm light bulb, and later in the day, after it was dry, fluffy, and moving with some energy, I placed it back in the empty nest, which the hen was still "brooding". I gently pushed the duck chick under her. She didn't object, so I left the duckling there. I stood by and watched. She began to poke around under herself, and then accepted the duckling. It has been 3 days now, and the pair are doing fine. She is an extremely attentive mother. Everything looks fine- there is food and water close by, and shelter of course. Is there anything I should be aware of? Thanks

I might worry about this, becuase as the duckling grows, (s)he will come to beleive that (s)he is a chickien. I have had male ducklings being raised by a chicken mama, when they grow up, try to mate with the hens. Ends up hurting seriously or sometimes even killing...
True, but I sold mine before that became a problem.

If it's a boy duck, you can always re-home him or get some female ducks to keep him happy. Chicken surrogate mamas sometimes get upset when young ducks take to water and follow them on the shore. But it works out.
