Just had one of our Delaware hens get hit by a pickup truck. The guy stopped and I don't think he was going very fast. For some reason some of our girls decided to go play by the road. There is only about 6 vehicles travel our road in a day.
When I got out there she was sitting beside the road, still alive. She lost a lot of pin feathers, favoring her right leg and panting heavy. When we got her back near the chicken coop, she started walking under her own power albeit very slowly. I'm sure she's in shock.
What can I do for her???

I would put her somewhere dark and warm away from any noise. I am not sure what you can do for a chicken in shock, wish I was of more help to you. I hope she pulls thru for you

Confine her in a small cage, in a quiet place. I wouldn't let her move around too much in case she had internal injuries. Offer her water and watch her closely.

Any other BYCers have this happen?

Rooster booster in water... simple sugars like bread and quiet...

I was once stopped by a fire engine that asked me if I knew who owned "this bird"...turned out it was a wild turkey that had been clipped by a car. I took her home, crated her, kept her quiet with food and water. In just a few days she looked so much better. I kept her a week just to be sure and released her into the nearest flock.

WOW-that's one tough chicken! I've never had one survive getting hit in the road.

I'm getting ready to head out to check on her. I checked on her a little while ago and she seemed to be breathing more normal, and actually started wlking away from me when I tried to pick her up. So I am breathing a little easier for the moment. Thank you for all the support and ideas. Will keep you posted.
