Hen House Daymare!!!

I think this is where the expression (Yikes Stripes) must have come from.
I have been chased by small pole cats, thats what they call the little type here, in my yard. LoL. Me and my hb running for life with two little bitty skunks in tow.
I hope never to find them in the hen house though. Yep! made up my mind when I save enough I will floor the coop with hardware cloth. To keep any digger out. Still laughing. I bet you were a sight. Jean

I have gone to the hen house after dark before, counted hens and noticed a shadow moving...yuppers a skunk-a-roo. I have had many encounters with skunks to find that they really don't want to spray, giving them a lot of respect, especially that firing end, I talk to them, tell them to move out, go, get, shoo. They generally will unless like you had a napping friend.
Blood meal seemed to have deterred my Pepi la pews, you lay it down heavy and each time it rains replay it. This is not going to smell to you and I, but your goats may not like it, I don't know. It is dehydrated and sterilized so no passing of bacteria etc.
Also, having been sprayed in the face before... Lever 2000 was what worked for me to remove odor- the folks at church didn't smell me when I gave hugs, lost a good outfit but it was my own fault.
Thank you for your tale, it was a great one to read to my mother over her cheerios! Its good when something makes her laugh.

Just wondering....how did the skunk get in? I would make sure it doesn't happen again!

That is nice, I miss my mom so much. She would have got a laugh from it too, you give her a big hug for me and tell her thats from ol' stinky.

antiquebuff , I have a fenced in run area that is attached to the hen house. They free range during the day and at night we lock up the pen. We got home late and it was dark already by the time we locked up that night, and hubby turned on the coop light to make sure everyone was to bed and turned it off and locked up. We think Mr. stinky was in the pen yard and we didn't see him in the darkness and may have locked him in. Funny thing was we checked all around the outside of the pen and no tunnels. The system we have is pretty good at keeping out the diggers. ( unless you lock them in that is ha ha.) But we did notice he tried to tunnel in to the coop from inside the pen not three feet from the big open door. guess they aren't too awful smart, well not this one anyhow.

Skunk Neutralizer Recipe
1 bottle hydrogen peroxide
1/2 box baking soda
1 Tablespoon of dish liquid (Dawn)
1 Quart Warm of water

Mix all ingredients in a bucket and spray liberally on surface let air dry.
Works great on Dogs-Saturate their coats and leave on for 10-15 minutes then rinse.

Tomato juice doesn't work. Just makes it smell like a skunk covered in spaghetti.

yup that is the recipe I made too. Hate to say it though it didn't do much for anything I used it on. It may just be intended to use just on pets though. I agree, the tomato juice never worked on our dogs either.
But on a good note, the spray bottle of straight vinigar worked as well as can be expected.
