I have 4 Buff Orpington pullets about 7 months old. They have been laying for about a month and a half fairly consistantly. One of the girls likes to make her own nest and ignores the nesting boxes. For a while it was in between a couple of straw bales, then there was one in the corner of the coop wedged in between a tub I use to catch poop from the roosting birds. The only reason I even found that nest was because she was missing that morning, there were 10 eggs in that one. I put a nesting box in that spot so she started using another corner. This morning I found her in the barn near where the silkie girls sleep making a racket in a new nest. How do I convince her that the nice nesting boxes(yes there are dummy eggs in each one) we have are just fine? Unfortunately, I think I already know the answer to that question.

I have a Wyadotte who does the same thing. I mess up where she's been nesting and she just makes another. I have tried golf balls, leaving the other eggs, locking her in the coop, nothing has worked. But, those are all good ideas to try!

I keep straw in the nesting boxes and litter on the floor. She just started laying and some need more time to figure it out.
