Hen illness advice after going to the vets

He gave us the egg back and it was just a usual egg really. I can’t feel an egg but her abdomen does feel a little bit like a water balloon but honestly I’m not sure if I’m imagining it. She has eaten a tiny bit of scrambled egg, her favourite seeds and some peas but I can’t tempt her to eat her normal crumb even when I made it into a paste. She has done a few more poops which were mostly water with white streaks, green bits and a bit of blood? She hasn’t had any other reproductive issues but she does often lay eggs with a bump around it

Poor darling, I’m sorry she isn’t feeling well. @coach723 is an educator, she might be able to weigh in on the droppings. Her abdomen does look a little bulgy below her vent, but maybe im just seeing things because of the wet feathers. coach723 might have advice about that, too. How old is she?

This morning I tried to put her out with the flock to see if that helps her a bit but she’s just stood there with her eyes shut in the same stance. I’m going to bring her back in now. Her poops do look a little better I think, I will attach some pictures. She’s 2 in a few months

I’m afraid that Willow didn’t make it. Thank you for all your advice i really appreciate it. This morning, I called the vets again and booked her in. As we pulled into the car park, her head flew back and she started violently seizing. I ran in and they took her into the back but she had passed by that time. He did some investigation and said that an egg was even further than the one that came out yesterday. He said that it had burst and caused septic shock. Unfortunately because she didn’t start showing symptoms until yesterday, we were already to late to prevent this and it would have been going on for days. I’m really upset that this is the outcome but I’m glad that she is no longer in pain and we now know what happened

I’m so terribly sorry to hear about Willow. They give us so many good days and a few really bad ones. I hope all of the memories and photos you have of her can bring you some comfort in this tough time. You did a lot to help her and I’m certain she lived a wonderful life with you.

With her abdomen appearing a bit distended, I was wondering if she didn’t have a long term reproductive infection of some sort. I’m glad your vet was able to give you definitive answers. My hen passed similarly in Dec. it was tough to go through.

I'm so sorry for your loss, but glad you have a vet that will see chickens, and that you got answers. Sadly, they hide illness so well, that it is often the case that something is going on for a while before we are aware. And reproductive problems are not uncommon, and also don't always have good treatment outcomes. :hugs
