My astrolop hen Sweetie was laying on the ground this morning, she had just laid an egg (out of the nesting box, which is unusual for her) and she didnt stand up when I came by to check on her.

When I picked her up she was making a gurgling sound. I brought her inside and she is sitting in a box next to me. Any ideas on what I can do to help her?

She is moving her head at odd angles, and keeping her mouth wide open. She was 100% fine yesterday morning, all the other chickens are fine. We havent had any new chickens come onto the property since last august and those were hatchery chicks.

Any help would be appreciated!!!!

sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection. Did she get wet in bad weather or anything? Keep her away from your chickens and get her in a warm, secluded box, maybe covered with a blanket so she can recover easier. I am not that good with the medications to use. Maybe someone else will chime in here. Does she have mucus discharge from her nose? Foamy or very watery eyes? Hope it turns out well for you.

If you have VetRx (can get at feed stores) place a few drops in her throat. Keep her warm and away from the other birds. Feel her abdomen. Is it bloated or firm? If this is a repiratory issue, she may be contagious to your other birds. Feel her crop as well and see if it feels unusually firm. Sometimes it can become clogged. Another drug to try is terramycin, it is for poultry, just follow directions.

We lost her, I had some vetrx and was preparing to give it to her when she begun to drip something out of her nose and mouth. I cant believe it she was fine yesterday and seemed great this morning when I let them out. the coop is dry and warm, and though they free range they have the option to come in and out of the coop if its cold or wet outside.
Thanks for the quick responses
RIP Sweetie
