This hen has a face that is swollen around the eyes. She's lethargic and unwilling to eat (her crop is empty) though I have seen her drink some. She also has diarrhea. I did see her gasp once but generally she breathes normally. I have treated her for mites but feel that answers lie elsewhere. I am planning on feeding her molasses water tomorrow to give her glucose and calories and then maybe syringe feeding her some cream of wheat.
Does anybody recognize this?

Does she sound congested? How does her crop feel? Is it empty first thing in the morning before she eats or drinks? Has she been eating or drinking? Does she normally lay eggs? Has she molted this fall?

Today's update: she's doing better! Yea! I gave her molasses water this morning and then a couple of hours later I gave her molasses water and cream of wheat via a syringe. Plus treating her with DE seems to be helping. Her face seems far less swollen now, so :idunnoShe is well enough that she scurries away when I go to pick her up because she's not used to it. Yesterday she did not care if I picked her up or did whatever. So, improvement!
I'll keep after her with the syringe and DE over the next few days until I see her eating normally.

What are you using DE for? It can be irritating to eyes and breathing in you and the chicken. Mites are usually killed by permethrin garden dust or spray, or Elector PSP.
