Hello everyone,

I have a 1-year old Plymouth rock hen who is not doing very well. I went outside this morning to see my hens in their coop. Peggy (sick hen) was standing in one spot barely moving any part of her body. I didn't think anything of it, so I left the house to run an errand. They were left in their coop for about an hour and a half until I got home. When I let them out, Peggy was still standing in that same spot. I opened the door for the other chickens and she still continued to stand there. I went to pet her and she didn't move (she is standing still, not laying down). I thought that was very strange, so I picked her up and brought her outside the coop. She stood there for a few seconds and then fell slowly to the ground. Her pupils were dilating back and forth, and she was clucking her beak every so often. She laid there and bobbed her head slightly for about five minutes and then slowly walked around. She is moving very slowly, and now she is standing in a corner again. We brought her some food in water, and she ate only a little bit of it then stopped. We are not sure what's wrong, and she is continuing to fall down and get back up again. Her poop is also very watery. None of the other chickens are exhibiting the same symptoms. I don't think she has been eating or drinking. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

My hen is similar. What happened with yours? Did any intervention work?

Sadly, she got progressively worse and died within 24 hours. We put her in a separate pen so if she did have a contagious disease she wouldn't spread it to the flock. We were not sure what to do or what she had, and she wouldn't drink or eat. We made her comfortable and she died shortly after that. I am pretty sure she might have had ascites, which from my research could be caused by ovarian cancer or liver disease. It happened so quickly, I don't think there could have been anything we could have done since she was declining so fast. I am so sorry this is happening to your hen :(..hopefully she might have something different than what my hen had.
