Hi i need help asap. My hen has been sick for the last few weeks and she has worsened in the last few days. Her abdomin is full and squishy. I stuck my finger up her butt and alittle runny poop came out but it seems that something is obstructing her hole. A red "ball" comes to the surface and she trys to push it out but cant. Is this part of your intestines or does this need to come out? I recently treated the flock with corid and another hen that was in rough shape recovered. FYI

Here is is. Please fill out about the bird showing the symptoms.

1) What type of bird , age and weight.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use

Look at the top of the disease section. It will say "sticky:" before a post, and it "sticks" to the top of the page. Before you post you should always read them. I'm guessing she is internal laying. Is the poop sticking to her rear at all? Internal laying is when the yolk gets in the abdomen and causes an infection. I, fortunately have not had to deal with this, but speckledhen has dealt with this many times. But before you jump to this conclusion you should get the opinion of some other folks, too.

Sounds like she might be egg bound. Probably the red flesh you are seeing is just her inside when she pushes. Have you tried warm soak for about 30 min? I am sorry wish I could help you more but if her abdomen is swollen she could very easily be egg bound. Maybe oilve oil around and just inside vent not to far though you don't want to break the egg if there is one in there.

i'm sorry for being impatient and i really love your help.

How do i know it is an egg or not....would it be red and fleshy?

dont knwo the anatomy of a chicken...would an egg come out of the same place as poop?

what is the vent...the hole? i'm in pa and it is cold..so i should bring her in the house and put her in the tub? she cant stand up anymore.

Should i stop putting my finger up there then
