I went out this evening to make sure everyone was in the coop and close the doors. I noticed one of my Marans on the nesting box which she was on about 2 hours ago. I thought...another broody hen..but my hens have not been laying much right now. Anyways..I went over to check under her and it was really wet. I picked her up and she was so wet water ran down her legs. I set her down and she is very wobbly and I could see the only part wet is her bottom and underneath her. I put her in a soft nest in a Rubbermaid tub so the other chickens would not bother her. So...does anyone have any ideas?? This is the first day out in a while but I had 20 other hens out with her. I can't think of anything environmental. I think I noticed she was training some....I am not familiar with how a hen acts when egg bound. Please someone help!!!

Thank You!

Sounds like maybe an egg broke inside of her and you saw the remains running out? what color was the liquid? did you noticed if there was any egg shell inside the nest? you might want to soak her in a tub of warm water for a while to see if she'll relax enough to maybe pass the rest? I have seen some pretty yucky stuff coming out of my hens before and just about freaked out about it but they are all fine so hopefully your hen will be too. I'd clean her up real good so you can get a feel for what might be going on.

Yes...I did see a few flakes in the nestbox but have had problems with one of my Delawares eating eggs and thought it was from that. Her posture was like one that is trying to pass a large egg. I have a bantam that does that frequently and it is the same posturing. Poor baby...this takes me back to when I had kidney stones and it was too big to retrieve it. They had to use a laser and bust it..of course I had to pass all those little shards of glass!!! Thanks so much. Anything I can feed her that would speed up the process??

Thank you McGoo...I felt so bad for her buddy hen..she was perched on the side of the nesting box watching her. I noticed when I closed the door she was on her way to console her. I had forgotten to mention that she had not laid in almost a month....if it is a broken egg will others do that before it clears up?

She may have a bad case of diarrhea. It can look like water practically. Yogurt, gatorade, pedialyte and some type of antibiodic.

Thanks everyone for all your help. My little hen did not last long.

She is fairly new and I don't know her habits yet. Since more of my hens are going broody and she had stayed in the nesting box I figured this was what she was doing. If I had not felt under her for eggs I would have not known what was going on because otherwise she looked fine. I am so upset...I do think she was egg bound...I am not sure if I felt the right places but she did not last long...she was so weak and I finally did not want to make it worse. Sometimes they just aren't meant to stay with us. This is my first time losing one of my chickens. I have had her for about 5 weeks and I don't think she had laid during that time. One of my Delawares had been eating eggs and so she may have and I did not know it. Anyway...I know next time one is on the nest for a while to check often for possible problems.
Thanks again.
