I think I have a healthy flock, I had a hen, not old, under a tree, she didn't run off when walking up to her and just took a couple steps and laid on the ground dead, I'm sad and don't want this to happen again, any suggestions as to what could have caused this? My chickens are my pets, I have no idea why this happened.

Sorry about your rooster, that has happened to me also. Just makes no sense, wish I could figure out the cause.

Sorry about your rooster, wish we could figure out the cause. Had a rooster and a couple other hens do the same thing, always sad when you lose a friend, including chickens.

I was told when starting out that you should count on losing 10% of your chickens a year. Now in 20 years I have rarely lost that many. Once in awhile I will lose one in the 2-3 years I keep them. One bunch I did lose 3 in about a year, all Barred Rocks. I have found that I usually lose them when they first start to lay or when they start again after molt. That is how the Rocks went. Sometimes you cannot determine the reason, unless you send them out for necropsy. It is just a fact that you will lose some. They may very well not be quite right internally from hatch.

The only way to know for sure is to have a necropsy done....refridgerate....don't freeze. I have seen hen topple over with a heart attack....they don't live forever and have many of the same issues people do...

Man I am so sorry about y'alls pets. I to lost one rir a few days back and have no clue why. I had mowed down some grass and threw it in the pen for them to eat and they had grit to. Don't know if it got a long piece it couldn't get down or what but now I am worried about them eating grass.
