I am just checking to see if anyone else here has had this happen with their hens.
We have a sex link red hen who just started laying about 2 months ago. She has consistently laid about 1 egg a day now since then. The other night when we went to show them off to someone there were two eggs in the roost area. One was a soft shelled egg and the other was shell less. We figured they needed more calcium so we upped the oyster shell in their food and gave them a dish of oyster shell for free choice. Since then, we have found one more soft shelled egg and figured the calcium hadn't taken effect yet. Last night I went to close them up and again found one soft shelled egg and one shell less egg right by the red hen. Now, during this time, she has consistently even on the days we found the shell less and soft shelled eggs laid an egg. So... what I think is happening is this.... I think she has lots of eggs that move too fast inside her and therefore we get a regular shelled egg during the day and soft shelled(and shell less) eggs at night when they just sort of slip out while she is sleeping. We did get a HUGE double yolker from her the other day. Is this possible? Are we doomed to get 3 eggs a day with one being useless - the shell less - from her for ever? Or is there a way to slow down the eggs in her so that we actually get doubles and hard shelled eggs? She gets lots of fresh grass and greens, a few veggie scraps, and chicken feed.
Has anyone else had this happen?
