My family has been raising a small flock of free range hens for a couple years now. We have a specific hen, Golden, who has been our champion layer for about a year and a half. Up until recently, we thought she had stopped laying and retired happily in our coop, but yesterday we discovered quite an event had been taking place daily in our flock. This specific hen was laying eggs, but they had no shells! This set off a sort of feeding frenzy among our hens, and they immediately broke open the egg and devoured it. This hen has normally given us eggs with quite strong shells, so me and my family members were quite surprised to find that she was laying eggs with no shell at all! Could this be some kind of vitamin deficiency, or a disease? Is there any way that we can prevent it from happening again? We already add oyster shells to their feed to boost shell strength.
