My family has been raising a small flock of free range hens for a couple years now. We have a specific hen, Golden, who has been our champion layer for about a year and a half. Up until recently, we thought she had stopped laying and retired happily in our coop, but yesterday we discovered quite an event had been taking place daily in our flock. This specific hen was laying eggs, but they had no shells! This set off a sort of feeding frenzy among our hens, and they immediately broke open the egg and devoured it. This hen has normally given us eggs with quite strong shells, so me and my family members were quite surprised to find that she was laying eggs with no shell at all! Could this be some kind of vitamin deficiency, or a disease? Is there any way that we can prevent it from happening again? We already add oyster shells to their feed to boost shell strength.

:heThe same thing happened to me a few days ago. I found 1 egg
just a yolk sitting there and the other one had a really thin membrane around around it like a balloon. The next day everything was normal (actually I got 9 eggs from 8 hens) I guess it happens.

I believe that I have read that it is not a good thing for the hens to start to eat eggs since they will continue to eat even good ones. Not sure about why no shell, but hope others can offer advice.

This just happened to us yesterday. We were letting them free range in the yard, and one of my hens who stopped laying for a few months pooped out a runny egg yolk, and the other hens ran up and ate it. She was just walking around the grass and it came out like a poop. Not sure what to do....I don't want the other hens getting the taste of eggs, because they are all new and ready to start laying any time now. Any advice for me?
