I have a hen that was doing fine yesterday and today she’s lethargic and has diarrhea with wet poop around her vent area. She’s laying down with her eyes half closed and is falling asleep a lot and just acts like she feels terrible, I haven’t seen her eat or drink today which worries me. I just got her 2 weeks ago with another hen and rooster which are acting fine as of now, they are all 1 year old. They haven’t layed any eggs since I’ve had them which I think is odd. I’ve seen yellow foamy poop and white poop with some mucus in it today, I was going to take a picture but they had covered it up by the time I got back out there. I’m thinking it’s coccidiosis but I wanted others opinions on it. I put 2 tsp of corid in their water but I’m worried about her not drinking any. Could I drip some corid directly in her mouth if she doesn’t start drinking?

I would agree that Corid for possible coccidiosis is a good idea, especially since she come from another owner. You can give undiluted Corid liquid 0.1 ml per pound of weight twice a day into her beak. I also would think about worming her with either Valbazen or SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer. How does her crop feel—empty and flat, full, hard, doughy or puffy? A picture of her droppings would be helpful. Some hens may suffer from reproductive disorders or cancer. Check her over for any enlargement in her lower belly between her legs and also look her over for lice and mites.

Her crop is soft, not to big and her lower belly feels soft also. I don’t see any lice. I do have SafeGuard goat dewormer, could you tell me the dosage for that? She’s about 5 pounds.

Dosage of SafeGuard for a 5 pound hen would be 1.25 ml given for 5 consecutive days. That will treat most all poultry worms. If given once and again in 10 days, that would treat only roundworms. Check her crop again in early morning before she eats to see if her ceop has emptied.

Thank you! I will check her crop in the morning.
