My hen Feejee (about 3 or four years old) jumped very awkwardly from the roost this morning as I was letting them out into the yard. The roosts are about 7 or 8 feet off the ground, and usually the birds just jump straight down, and there's never been any issues before now. She flew out the door and rolled sideways very awkwardly and immediately popped up, perfectly fine. However, a limp became very apparent as soon as she started walking. No cuts or swelling, nothing in the foot like bumble/infection/foreign bodies. I was concerned and picked her up, felt the whole leg and foot, went all the way up to the hip. There's no swelling or anything broken that I can feel, and it's not affecting her ability to move (she hops on 1 leg now, but can easily access food and water). She's not making any noises and I also moved her leg, stretching and collapsing it. She didn't make any sounds or flinch at all. I'm probably just going to leave her be and let her heal, maybe crate her at night so she can't jump off the roost.

Hi!
We had a hen limping without explanation about a month ago. One of the educators on here (at least I think they are an educator, very knowledgeable) had posted about isolating for 10 days with restricted movement. We did this and after 10 days she still occasionally limped but only for a short time. Technically, the advice was to restrict her for another 10 (I think) if she was still limping but it was so slight, we decided to see how she did without restriction. You would never know that she was injured, seeing her now.

We put a dog kennel in the run with the divider in it, making it a small space. We kept her in the run hoping she wouldn’t feel alone. I had some small hanging feeders that fit nicely so she had her own food and water. At night, we put her in a small pet carrier, on the roost bars (I have 2 bars that run parallel so it balanced there fine) so she was still “part of the flock” but couldn’t jump or run. She didn’t love going in the pet carrier every night but it fixed her limp!

I would tag the original owner of this solution if I could remember who it was but you might find the post if you search. Good luck!
