hello, I have an almost 2 year old hen and about a week and a half ago she started limping. Ive been looking at her leg and nothing seems to be wrong, but I put her in an extra coop with 2 other younger hens to try and help her heal, but it seems like she has gotten worse. She can barely stand on her left leg at all and she is panting a lot. I just brought her inside to give her some aspirin and I noticed that when she was breathing her body would make this popping like noise. She hasnt been laying any eggs recently but i think that is just because it is winter and most of my hens arent laying.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong?

Have you checked under her foot? Is it possible she jumped and it's sprained?
Could you upload a video? Take a video of her walking and if possible the sound of her breathing. Download to YouTube then upload here.

It's a good idea to separate her from the flock & with the breathing sound, not a good idea to put with any of your chickens. If you can confine her in a dog crate with shaving so she can rest the leg until you figure out what's up with it.

Are her eyes clear? Any bubbly liquid?

It's probably not an injury because it would have improved some by this time. I assume you examined her legs and feet for injuries and bruising.

The breathing aspect is most troubling. That indicates possible tumors suppressing her breathing. Tumors throughout the body will cause all sorts of other issues such as hindering egg laying.

The cause could be an avian virus. Typically, the sciatic nerve becomes inflamed and starts to cause lameness, and that progresses to the other leg in time. The two viruses that cause the symptoms your hen has are Marek's and lymphoid leucosis. Unfortunately it's not possible to know for sure without a necropsy after she dies.

yes, i checked her under her foot. we do have 2 dwarf goats who could have done something to her. The popping like sound has stopped, so i can try to record it if it starts again.

I have a crate i can put her in alone, do you think i should put the 2 she was with in a quarantine before i put them back with the rest of the flock? her eyes seem clear with no liquid.

yeah, i was thinking something like this after she wasnt healing, is their anything that you think i should give her to help?

I’m so late in the game for this. But my two year old Olive Egger is going through the same thing right now. What happened to your baby?
