I was given a flock of chickens and have been caring for them for a few mths at someone else's house. They have been moved over to my place about 3 weeks ago- with a new coop and now that they are here I get to spend a lot more time with them and watch them a lot more. :D
I have a hen who is limping pretty good and I'm trying to figure it out. This limping has been going on about 5 days now. There aren't chicken vets here that I'm aware of.
I noticed one rooster had scaly leg mites, and I think she does too. I soaked all of their legs (the whole flock) in warm water and applied a thick coating of bag balm 3 days ago.
At that time I saw she was missing part of a toe. I think that is an old injury- it looked well healed over, but I sprayed a little blue kote on it just to add a little protection since I was holding her already.
She also looks to have a bumble on her foot, but it doesn't really look swollen to me. I don't want to open that up and remove it if that isn't the issue. Has anyone had a bird limp from that without the foot being swollen up? Will removing it help?
What do you think? I'm attaching pics of her foot- keep in mind that broken toe is not black, it is covered in blue kote.

Sometimes with bumblefoot the swelling will be on the top of the foot rather than where the black spot is on the bottom. She could be limping because of her black toe which probably was lost from frostbite or injury. If in doubt cut the bumblefoot plug out with a sharp scalpel or cutting tool, and pack with iodine and gauze, then vet wrap.
