Hi,

One of my 7 month old hens is eating very little, and drinking little too. She is shaking, and has lost feathers. Her comb has turned slightly purple at the top. she has been separated from the rest of the flock. Her poop is healthy, if a bit runny. She isn't moving alot and has walked a small amount. She closes her eyes for a few minutes at a time. She is lethargic, and will suddenly open her eyes to sounds around her.

I think it is damage caused by cockerels, as she is losing feathers on her back, and she is having trouble walking. she has stopped laying.

They were wormed last month. I've put ACV in her water, and put a poultry spice in her food.

Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Usually a purplish comb means she is not getting enough oxygen/ poor circulation.
It's difficult to guess what could be wrong. All I can offer are the usual suggestions,
separate her, keep her warm, add some electrolytes to her water, try some poultry vitamins & soft food.

What does her abdomen feel like? Does it feel normal or is it filled with water like a water balloon or does it feel hard?

Thanks for your reply. Her abdomen feels slightly hard. She refuses to eat now. I don't have any electrolytes, unfortunately.

It could be she is laying internally. How long has it been since she laid an egg?
If that is what it is, there is not much you can do.

Try to dribble water along her beak so she drinks and maybe offer some treats like mashed hard-boiled egg with a little yogurt.

I don't know how long it's been since she last laid an egg..

I've given her water, and yoghurt soaked in bread, but I'm going to have to wait until the morning before I can do anything more, because she is in for the night.
