I have a 10 month old splash orphington. It looks like a hen. Has a hen body but the comb is a bit large for a orphington hen but not like a rooster. The comb is about the size of a comb on a weslumer. Today I was suprised to see her mount another hen and breed her like a rooster. This is a mixed laying flock , only hens no rooster. In the next pen I do have a silkie rooster and I do hear him crowing. Since there are 12 hens in the pen I do not know if this bird is laying. Have any of you experienced this behavior?

Nope, but without pictures, I'd guess you have a rooster there!

Often a dominant hen will emerge in a flock with no roo....and handle "mating", etc.

Some time back I got a group of 8 mo old pullets from another farmer. Same thing happened - dominant hen mounting the others. After quarantine, I put them in with a roo. The dominant gal even sparred with the roo for 3 days!
