My 3 year old RIR has been acting weird the past week. She has been sneezing for several weeks and no other respiratory symptoms. In the past week, she has been "snoring" during sleep and then she started having a drippy nose. I started her on Tylan and she just finished it. She stopped laying 2 weeks ago, but she had tiny eggs twice - one was a soft shelled egg.

When she was on Tylan, she had poopy butt. No issues with eating or drinking.

The past 72 hours have been tough - she stopped eating and drinking, is not interested in ANYTHING but some live mealworms, but not like she used to. I gave her a warm bath, checked her vent a few times and nothing else. Her comb is getting a little darker (purple) and no sneezing or respiratory.

Her crop is squishy, but not sure if it's from some food and water she had when I didn't see her?

The past 48 hours, I've been giving some mLs of Nutri-drench.

She seems really "out of it" and in a daze. Her sister passed away in January from Merek's.

PLEASE HELP.

Sorry about your hen. She could have infectious bronchitis or MG, but with Mareks in the flock, she may have reduced immunity. Tylan is good treatment for MG, while IB is a virus that won’ t respond to antibiotics. The soft eggs could be a result of IB. I like to give chopped cooked egg, tuna, and really wet chicken feed with a bit of plain yogurt mixed in can get them eating. With Mareks in the flock she will be a carrier, and she could be affected by it, but hopefully her immune system will help to fight off this problem. IB lasts around a month, and it can cause reproductive and kidney side effects.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I was thinking that as well and had Tylan on hand so I started to treat her. Her respiratory symptoms have improved, but the not eating and drinking has come from this. She does not want eggs, yogurt, rice, oats, wet feed... the only thing she ate today was a few worms and some bites of cantaloupe. She pecks on the ground sometimes, but doesn't pick up any food.

I noticed her squishy crop in the morning, but sje had food and water available to her so I'm not sure if her crop is sour or impacted. I did remove the food and water tonihht so I will check to see if her crop is not emptied.

If not, I'll have to try to empty it for her and this will be my first time! I hope that this is what's causing for her not to eat or drink and not eyp or mareks!

Today, she didn't drink any water, but she ate some live meal worms and some watermelon.

She has an appointment with a vet tomorrow, but is there anything else I can do for her?

Should I continue to syringe nutri-drench for her? Any tips?

She still hasn't really "pooped", but then again, she's not eating much :(

The melon is a good way to get water into her. Her crop could be sour if she has a bad odor coming from her mouth. But her crop could be slow because of another illness. I am a little concerned that she could have some reproductive problems, since she had both soft shell and the mini fart eggs. Internal laying, ascites, or egg yolk peritonitis can make them sick, lose weight, have no appetite, have runny poops, and they may lie around or separate themselves. There is not much that can be done. Antibiotics such as amoxicillin or baytril sometimes are given to prolong life, but it cannot be cured. Most times we don’t know for sure that they have it until we open the belly after they die. A spongy or fim lower belly can be a sign of those. If you do see a vet, let us know what they think.

Thank you - I was thinking that as well. When they did the necorpsy on her sister, they saw that her ovaries were infected. I'm preparing for the worst and will post what the vet says. My first priority is for her to feel well and pain-free and my emotions and devastation of losing her is my least of my worries. I've been a chicken mom for 4 months :( and lost my first one in 2 weeks - she was already sick when I got her.
