Hello all - I have 3 hens that were all hatched in mid-March. The Ameraucana was laying great starting in August until last week, almost an egg every day. As of last week she hasn't laid any. They do have free range but our yard is small and I have checked everywhere for an egg outside the egg box. Also, my Australorp is a big girl and she has yet to lay one egg! The only one that is currently laying is my Wyandotte. So I guess my questions are
    1. Is it normal for a hen to just totally stop laying?
    2. Why hasn't my Australorp started yet? (she is about 27 weeks).

Unless a chicken is a commercially bred layer, then yes, it's normal for hens to stop laying and resume a couple of weeks later. Some breeds go broody, others not, but they still stop laying for a week or two. I guess its just their bodies having a time out.

Maybe your Australorp is a late developer?
